Guard What Has Been Entrusted To You – A Sermon for the Feast of St. Joseph (40 min)

Listen to Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet’s great sermon on St. Joseph, entitled “Guard what has been entrusted to you.” Bossuet’s panegyric on the patron of the universal Church is one of the earliest surviving formal orations in honor of the foster-father of our Lord.

Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet (1627-1704), Bishop of Meaux, is celebrated for his pulpit oratory, as it is called, that is, the art of composing and delivering a sermon. Like any good Catholic priest, he often preached from memory and on subjects of more-or-less daily concern to his flock. But in 17th-century France, there was a great appetite for formal pulpit oratory, an appetite regularly satisfied by hour-long sermons for which one would send one’s footman to secure a pew the day before the Mass!

This sermon is sure to increase your devotion to the chaste protector of the Blessed Virgin and zealous defender of Christ, St. Joseph. May we endeavor to mirror his purity, obedience, and patience in our daily lives.

Joseph of Nazareth: The Story of the Man Closest to Christ (1h 37m)

Make it a movie night!

The first feature film ever on the story of St. Joseph, who was a carpenter, the husband of Mary, and the foster father of Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that St. Joseph was a “just man” and that God gave him the most daunting task ever asked of a man–to be the husband of the woman who would give birth to the Messiah and the father and protector of this Holy Family. He would be the man closest to Christ.

This film uses creative license in telling the story of St. Joseph. Some scenes may not be suitable for all audiences. Parental guidance is suggested.
