Marriage Many rituals of various kinds and origins surround a wedding. These rites of preparation and celebration are ways for the couple, the families and friends to share in and to strengthen the making of a marriage. The marriage rite itself is the covenant made by bride and groom, the consent each gives to and accepts from each other. Matrimony should never be entered into lightly. The Catholic Church views this covenant as a very solemn vow made before God Himself - He alone creates the union of two people. Thus, as those who have entered into marriage carelessly have discovered to their sorrow, putting asunder what God has joined together is a very difficult process and is not always resolved to the petitioner's satisfaction. The four months from notification of intent to marry to the actual celebration of this sacrament is intended, through marriage preparation programs, to help ensure the union grows and endures unto death.
